How does a Sudbury born business owner now living in Ottawa get such an honor?...

It's a little bitter sweet I guess, as the team I grew up watching was bested by my new Hometown Heroes leading into Friday's home opener...but all that being said, I'm looking forward to the opportunity!

Congratulations Vancouver

I was lucky enough to get tickets to 5 events at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Submitted my application for a package in November 2008 and actually got the tickets in the very first draw. As the date grew closer, I started to reconsider attending the events. I contemplated selling them on the fan-to-fan marketplace and taking a trip down south. I was picturing standing outside in the freezing cold, waiting in lines and really not getting much value from the events. A very good friend of mine convinced me that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and to give it a try. I can't thank him enough, not just for hosting me, feeding me and acting as my Vancouver tour guide but for convincing me to go to the games.

I have never had a better time and VANOC and the city of Vancouver should be incredibly proud of the entire event. Transportation was exceptional and free if you had event tickets, line-ups were long but moved very quickly, security was tight but friendly and fast, the city looked incredible decked out in the blue and green but the biggest difference makers were the volunteers! Every corner of every street, every venue, everywhere there was a "blue jacket" available to help. Not only were they available, they were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. In my opinion you made the experience so much better.

I can't imagine the planning involved in an event that size and to make it happen so smoothly and to make it so easy for us as spectators made me proud to be Canadian. Of course our athletes performance was incredible which just made the atmosphere in Vancouver even better.

New Features At ScoreCrazy.com

In the last few weeks we've been very busy upgrading the sevices we offer with some new features. Most of these features are suggestions from people who use the site and some others are our own creation.

The Blog - If you're here, you noticed the blog. We're hoping to keep this filled with interesting opinions on sports in general with a focus on amateur sports. Look for experts to post information on different subjects which should be of interest to our readers.

Uploads - We have added the ability to upload Venues, Teams, Players, Officials and now even Schedules. All you need to do is download our .CSV template, fill it in with your info and upload it. It's faster and easier than ever. We felt this was critical since our manual system can be cumbersome. Try it and let us know what you think!

Search Tool - You'll notice in the grey bar below the list of sports we've added a search feature. This will allow you to search for a player name or a team name. We're hoping this makes finding things on the site a little easier.

Divisions - Tournaments and leagues can now have divisions. This will allow for a single schedule divided into divisions. It is not retroactive and will only apply to new leagues or tournaments. We are hoping that this will also make the list of leagues and tournaments shorter over the long term as leagues won't need separate playoff leagues.

Game Numbers - You'll notice that game numbers are displayed (when entered) in the schedule. This will help league organizers and teams when referring to the schedule.

Day Name - We have added the Day Name to the schedule (ie: Saturday, Feb 21, 2009). Again, just an effort to make it easier for you to get your information from the site.

General Clean Up - We have gone through and archived older leagues, blank leagues and tournaments. This is an effort to make finding and navigating to your league easier.

There are many more changes to come. All of our efforts right now are on making the site easier to use, easier to navigate and overall a better experience for those who use the site. Please let us know any suggestions you have for other tools and if we can, we'll make it happen.

Fighting In Hockey

It seems to me that over the last few months, the hockey world has taken a very different look at fighting and even those who have been stubbonly pro-fighting are starting to change their minds. The coverage of this topic is everywhere and so I thought that I would put my thoughts into the ring.

I have always been someone who believes that "enforcers" and "tough guys" have a important place in the game. However, the role of the "enforcer" has changed over the years and the form that it takes now is no longer of any value to the game of hockey. When you see Iginla drop the gloves and take on an opponent, that's entertaining, it's emotional, it's spur of the moment and it's someone trying to help his team win. However, when two players without NHL level hockey skills arrange to drop the gloves at centre ice because that's their "role", it just seems pointless to me. It's like a side show. Hockey is the most entertaining sport on earth, it doesn't need side shows, in fact they cheapen the game.

So, really my stance is that fighting has a place in hockey, but scheduled, organized fights between two players who are not really part of the actual hockey game is not that place. Unfortunately, I don't think that changing rules will provide the necessary changes. Totally banning fighting from hockey is not the answer and is probably not really possible. Changing the culture is what is required. Making it acceptable for two players to have a battle in the heat of the moment, but unacceptable for unskilled players to take up room on rosters. It's a huge mountain to climb for the NHL as they will have to take the forefront on this issue. I truly hope that they don't try to remove it from the game, but try to adjust the thinking to ensure that skilled players play and decide the game at all times.

Welcome to the first ever blog entry in the new blog by ScoreCrazy.com. I'm Jonathan and I'm the CIO.

My partners and I took over this site in the spring of 2008 with the intention of creating the best possible online management utility for all amateur and recreational sports organizations. Sounds like a lofty goal, and it is. It has proven to be a difficult but rewarding task. Creating a tool that can handle all sports at all ages with all of their varying needs, and keeping that site easy to use and up to date is a challenge, doing that without charging anyone a penny has added another level to the game. With that said, it's just a challenge and we will never change our plans of keeping this site free for use to all amateur sports oranizations.

We grew up playing recreational sports and have been involved in associations and clubs most of our lives. We realize that any costs incurred at the top have to be passed to the bottom which is always the athlete or the athletes family. Sports, even at the recreational level are expensive and can even be too much for some. We want to add a tool that not only helped organizations but one that added a little more fun to the game. Being able to see your teams stats, your teams rankings and your personal stats can add a level of pride and competition and that's what it's all about.

We have plans for all kinds of new features but we need to develop them and that takes time and money so they'll be rolled out as fast as we can. In the mean time, enjoy the site, tell your friends and play your games.
